was....

wait for it....

Are you ready???

Ok - 'It was good.'

I'm not gonna lie, I'm not a good cook...so - that's a raving review in our household, upgraded from 'It was fine'. Which is 90% of the time.

I call is a success! But really, add taco seasoning to anything and it'll be good! This was also semi-healthy too though so I was proud.

and ate it all without taking a picture.

sorry...my bad.

So use your imagination!

Layer of nacho chips
Layer of a this mixture:
1avocado, a little mayo and leftover ricotta cheese - add taco seasoning to taste
Layer of frozen veggies of your choice(we had carrots, peas and corn)
Layer of canned beans, drained.
Layer of chopped up chicken
Layer of salsa
Layer of shredded cheese of your choice.

Throw in the oven for 20 minutes or until cheese is melted.

Scoop it with chips or eat plain.

Enjoy!
Epic Fail!

BUT on the bright side, I got my healthy on again as of Wednesday and decided to do a 3 - day raw food cleanse....well, by this morning my little nursing baby was slightly annoyed and a little gassy - sooo, this was a bit of a fail too. I'm not going to continue with it for her sake and that it was gross drinking pureed veggies all day....but mostly the baby thing ;)

The bright side though? I lost 4 lbs just doing the cleanse for 1 day! Good jump start to getting back on track and I've done my squats the last two night sin a row. For now I'm sticking to veggies and fruit for a couple more days but I'll just eat them instead of pureeing them all together - now I just have to try and get to them before Carlee eats them all on me.

That's it here for my weight watch but check out my girlies at Easter this weekend:)

My fitness class is on break for a couple of weeks so I needed something to get me focussed and doing something productive in the evening other than snacking...so I've decided to do a squat challenge!

Given I can already do over 100 squats in a row easily but I definitely don't do it often enough so here I am, someone keep me accoutable...and maybe join me so I know I'm not alone in this!! :)

Here is the site: http://www.twohundredsquats.com/week6.html

I'm starting in week six but read through and start where works for you! I'm following up my squats with a couple of 30 second planks that I'm trying to get back up to 1 minute...if only I could find those abdominal muscles that Emma stole on her way out ;)

My challenge for myself is to do this 3-4 x a week minimum.

To go along with this, I am making diet changes including starting the day with a green smoothie, changing my daily coffee to Dandy Blend, and drinking Apple Cider Vinegar in Green tea throughout the day and taking daily probiotics.

I like to weigh in 4x/day...but that doesn't seem to be working so well. I think I'll cut back to 1/week instead. So get your squat on and meet me back here in one week!

Go!
February 23 was Carlee's 2nd birthday! How the years go so fast, I don't know! We had a low key open house with friends and family the weekend of her birthday with some cake and a special tutu for her to wear:) Unfortunately she napped right up til party time so she ruined her pretty hair and it never got fixed... But hey, she didn't care and we all had a good time:) Check out all the cousins/little friends chowing down on cake, haha!

I spent many months feeling guilty, not enjoying whatever was left of that relationship and just simply like a failure. I could not figure out how to fix this, nor did I know how to get help for this. Until I found the local La Leche League, and a world of supportive moms full of knowledge to help guide me through examining what may have gone wrong with our first attempt as well as helping me prepare to try again with baby 2- Emma:) They sat with me as I cried out my feelings and worked my way to a place of fight! I would have a plan, and if at the end of that I still did not have a full supply then I would redefine what a successful breastfeeding relationship was and learn to enjoy what we had, whatever it looked like.

So, with Carlee I had a lot of pain latching which I later learned indicated a latch issue but I also had PCOS which is related to a lack of breast tissue growth in pregnancy for a small percentage. It was impossible at this point to know whether one or both were responsible for my previous experience so I needed to prepare for both possibilities.

My plan:)
A variety of supplements and a network of women to help me address any latching issues that may arise, as well as the contact info for a well known breastfeeding guru - Jack Newman. I knew this time around, at the end of the day I would have done all I could to give my daughter that relationship.

Then, Emma was born November 20th at 6:12 am in our guest bedroom with our wonderful midwives. Big Sister Carlee got to be in the room as she woke up just before delivery having slept through everything up til then - and then went off to spend the day with a neighbour and give us some time to sleep and cuddle with Emma! It was a beautiful start of just being in bed together nursing and sleeping the day away:)

Days passed and my mom took care of Carlee so I could just focus on letting Emma nurse as much as she wanted - all day and all night:) We all held our breath as the day came that Carlee stopped gaining - I even called a friend and LLL leader to assure me that her latch looked good - and we waited for the midwife to come assess how we were doing.

We watched impatiently as she took the sling and scale and put Emma in....and saw the numbers go up and up.....and it was confirmed!

Emma was gaining! No, not just gaining - she was thriving:)

We were nursing like there was not even the possibility of a problem and no sign of any issues in sight.

And that was it - no pumping, no herbs, no getting tongue ties cut or going on drugs...this time around I got to simply enjoy holding my baby and know that for whatever reason, this time my baby was surviving just off of me!

Here is how our family looks with the newest little one!

Christmas 2012

This week my SIL welcomed her 2nd child and now we wait a few more weeks for my sister to welcome her 2nd child!! I have visions of all these little cousins running around in a few years just like their older siblings are now!

Speaking of, C turns 2 on Saturday...my little girl, the experiment;) Now she is a fun loving, tantrum throwing, stubborn like her mama, beautiful, smart girl. She is so no longer a baby which we are stunned by! She loves to do puzzles, play dress up, serve tea with her new tea set, ring around the rosie, baths galore, and help mom in the kitchen whenever allowed. She is learning that she can make decisions and test the boundaries which is all exciting and frustrating in one:)

Her 2nd birthday present? A trip to Florida!

Not really.

We were going anyways, but it was conveniently right before her birthday and since we met Oma & Opa there, she got to have a party at Chuck E Cheese! Spoiled little girl! That and a week living in her bathing suit was heaven on earth in her eyes! Especially with two playmates to meet her there! Wandering if Oma has recovered yet...

Anywho, we had a fantastic time! Here's a glimpse:
And since our family life is quite busy at this time I am taking time to focus on that, and not posting here. For now, I will be taking a break from blogging for the time being.

I have a feeling our busy-ness will not be going anywhere as we look forward to the arrival of our second daughter this coming November! We are so excited to prepare for going from one child to two(which I've heard is the hardest transition!) and for myself, to attempt breastfeeding with more knowledge and confidence this go around and set a goal of reaching a minimum of a year with this babe! (see my post on breastfeeding here, if interested).

So, on that note, thank you for reading and all your comments! It has been a joy to write and share with all of you :)
A frosted mirror!

Hopefully not in a tacky way.
But for now - we are very pleased with our much improved bathroom! Now, just to remind you - this is what we first were using.
No running out that day to pick up whatever I feel like having, splurging on a fun meal. There is always more in our house than we think there is - so much goes forgotten!

This may be a challenge as my parents are driving down to visit on Thursday but we'll see how it goes - for as many days as possible, outside of fresh produce needed, I will only cook with what is already in the house:) Doable? I hope so!

Day 1? Well, its family day here and we got invited to the in-laws for supper....well this is easy so far! ;) Tomorrow though, I have some leftover tortilla wraps to use up - veggie quesadilla anyone?? Perhaps with fish as well:) Yum!

After this, I've been inspired by http://www.livinglaughingandloving.com to start planning meals and shopping for 2 weeks of meals at a time. Makes me nervous just thinking about it:S

Anyone want to join me? What would you find in your pantry??
I still feel there is an underlying issue causing PCOS that I haven't addressed but as my doctor is not interested in investigating this - its hard to prove that and treat it properly....but that's not the point here. Very possibly thyroid as taking kelp seems to be helping a lot. I have learned a lot about BFing and PCOS since having Carlee, and am saddened that with the right help we could have been more successful - but also feel encouraged that I am now more educated to work towards a better BFing relationship with out future children. Well, anyways - this is a bit of my story.

I worked my very hard to ensure I was able to get pregnant (lost weight, better diet, stabilizing hormones) and then have a very healthy weight and diet throughout my pregnancy. I had very little PG symptoms which I thought was great, including no breast tenderness and little growth. After asking my midwife if the PCOS was reason for any further concern, and being told no - I went into my pregnancy assuming I would have the normal problems of learning to latch, etc...but fully prepared to BF my daughter for as long as we both felt beneficial.

My daughter was born, a pretty easy labour and delivery - no drugs and afterwards I didn't even really feel tired....maybe that was the adrenalin:) Carlee latched on like a pro - the midwife and nurses were all impressed and left us feeling certain everything would go great. After 2 days she was down to 7lb 2oz, 4 days 7 lb 4 oz, 6 days 7 lb 4 oz - and we were absolutely shocked. Thank goodness my mom was with me because I was inconsolable. I went home and we thought maybe we weren't giving her enough time to finish eating...we spent two days just feeding her like mad, with no success.

My midwife advised I go on Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek and start pumping every two hours, following each feed and supplementing her in between, I did not know about HM4HB at the time so she got formula. That killed me a little. I couldn't even comprehend what was happening. After 2 weeks of this and no noticeable difference we moved on to domperidone, again with no results. I finally started my own research, knowing there had to be more to this - the only known issue is my PCOS and a quick google search brought up a multitude of information that this was most likely the culprit. At that point I knew that a galactologue would not give me the tissue that did not grow so I quit the pumping and DOM, which I found out later was what was behind me gaining 20 lbs in 3 weeks. I didn't know where to turn - my midwife did not offer any other alternatives or provide me with a reference for someone who would...I felt like I was stuck with having to supplement her and had no support to tell me otherwise. With my mom having gone home, and no local family, - I felt very alone. We moved on to enjoying each other finally.

I was blessed though - my daughter kept up our breastfeeding relationship til 8 months so I knew she was at least getting some BM every day, and when she quit I found local donors so she had milk at least on a semi regular basis. At that point I still felt like a failure and had immense guilt for the formula that I had to give to Carlee. But God knows what He is doing - He gave me the desire to start a business with pre and postnatal women, leading me to network with local women who also specialize in this area. What a surprising twist. I met so many women who taught me to forgive myself and to be proud of the effort I did make in the situation I was put in. And these women led to me to a huge online network of women dealing with the same issues, and a wealth of information.

I still don't know the root of my issues but work with my naturopath to heal my body as much as possible, and now understand that I was one of a very small percentage that has not a low milk issue but a low tissue issue - most likely my progesterone levels did not increase as they should in pregnancy to stimulate an increase in mammary tissue. I now have a list of things I can do in pregnancy and after birth to encourage growth and alternatives to domperidone with less side effects (the last thing a post natal woman wants is to take a drug that will cause crazy weight gain!!) Maybe it won't work with our future children, maybe I'll still have to deal with uneducated women who believe 'anyone can BF'(mostly true, but not completely!) and judge me and the bottle feeding my baby, but I choose to think of the women I can now help and the support I can now be to other women based on my experiences, and finally to enjoy my children knowing I'm doing the best I can possibly do in the situation. And I'll be happy with that:)

And my plan for the next baby is as follows:
Tea of goat's rue/alfalfa/nettle/red raspberry daily during and after pregnancy
Regularly take: fish oil, B Complex, Kelp
Placenta Encapsulation after birth
Progesterone cream up until delivery starting as soon as pregnancy is known
Leptaden pills after birth

Thanks for listening to my Bfing rant! Its healing to put pen to paper of our struggle and success of breastfeeding:)

All you Canadians, have a great Family day! I'll spend it thinking of way to make Carlee's birthday very fun as she turns the big 1 on Thursday! We can't wait:)

Well, Can you believe in a week it will be a year since Carlee joined our family? Tis true! Which means as of Tuesday I returned to my job, but just 2 days a week. I am so blessed to be able to be part time at my job, run a fairly successful business teaching fitness classes locally and stay home with my baby the majority of the week! Its pretty special. I would love to be home full time at this point, but remind myself it will all come in time and I am very blessed to have the situation as it is - especially a close friend who lives very close to us to care for Carlee while we are working. Next weekend we will have a little get together for Carlee's birthday which will be very fun too...Its very weird to go from having a __ month old to have a one year old!! Amazing!

The bathroom is SO close to being finished the construction phase and within the week I will be able to go in a paint and decorate! The before and after is astounding and I can't wait to share with you very soon how its coming along!

The PCOS continues to be a daily battle for me - my lymph drainage is very 'stuck' according to my naturopath and to date nothing has helped it move. Our newest attempt is to increase my iodine intake, with the thought that as closely related the thyroid function is to pcos...perhaps this is part of what is holding me back yet - maybe even what triggered pcos in the first place. So that has started for the last few weeks, we will see if that helps matters at all:)

And my newest addition to my healthy eating? To ensure I am eating enough green vegetables eat day I added a smoothie into my day - harder on days I work but regularly:) I am eating what are called 'Green Monsters'. There are many different versions of this but mine consists of spinach, avacado, cucumber, alternative milk of some type, hemp protein powder with maca and flax, berries, banana and sometimes kiwi or peaches. I've found i HAVE to have berries - nothing else covers of the taste to make it enjoyable. But I enjoy it, and feel good that I've added a good amount of healthy food in the morning - a time that was usually filled with some sort of mediocre carbs:)

What are you doing today to help rather than hinder your health?

A precious moment from earlier today...Carlee wanted to just sit and lay her head on my chest. It happens so rarely and was so nice to sit and enjoy a few cuddles:) Of course this usually means she is not feeling great, maybe some teeth on the way again, but I'll take it!

My bathtub is now in the bathroom, not my living room:) Yup, that's the good life...it doesn't actually have running water yet, but suddenly my living room looks huge so I'm happy!

Last weekend my FIL came over and we were able to put the new flooring down and put the bathtub in place and prepare the plumbing for the vanity to be put in place...each weekend we get a little done, a step at a time. It would be nice to have several days and get it all done at once, but for now I'm perfectly happy just having a toilet upstairs again:) Going down to the basement each time was getting old...

Here are some new pictures of how the bathroom is looking now!

So, the bathroom reno continues. Once this is out of the way I'm getting inspired to make a space in the main floor for Carlee to be creative as she gets older...a little table and chairs with craft supplies...can't wait!

Saturday the walls came down and new walls put up, and we are now working on the putty between the pieces of drywall...that's a new technique to learn for the hubby but his skills are coming along:) That pretty much took all day for them so then Monday we called up my FIL(who is super awesome by the way - apparently 25+ years of homeowning teaches you ALOT!) to come by and hopefully put in the new bathtub...well, we got the bathtub, but once we got the old one out we saw the flooring had been getting damp under the tub so it would be wise to put a new layer of flooring down first:) So the bathtub sits in my living room, but we have a lovely new floor waiting for new flooring now! Perfect! The plan is for that to go in Friday - will let you know how it goes!

Life continues to be busy as I am running a little business from the home as well as planning to go back to work 2 days a week come February! its gonna be a bit crazy as we settle into that routine but I think it will work well once we get used to it. My business is taking off well too, and I look forward to doing that part time and quitting my regular job at some point....exciting and scary!

My weight loss journey? Going well:) I am down to within 10 lbs of the pre-pregnancy weight. I have been doing some research and found out that pcos was not to blame for my weight gain after I had initially lost most of the weight after having Carlee - nope...that responsibility lays on the drug domperidone! I had been told to take it to try to increase my milk supply when I ran into problems due to pcos inhibiting the production of glandular tissue, which didn't work....but did give me some 20 lbs extra for fun! So in a roundabout way, still PCOS issue, but not directly related:) I still find it hard to stay on a healthy diet when surrounded by friends who don't, but most days, I do ok.... And stay motivated to be healthy so we can attack the hormones with our next child and try BFing again. We did continue partially BF til 8 months, but I would love to BF exclusively for a full year or more with the next one:) A fun/stressful challenge to face for the future!

That's it for now! I will be back soon with pictures of our new bathroom!

DEMO

The start of the bathroom reno came with wall paper down and tiles shattering to the ground:) No more white with blue flowers left except for on the countertop. The walls need to be taken down and new ones put up, new vanity put in, new bath tub put in and fix the flooring. Then the final touches of painting and such...that doesn't sound like much right?? ;) Excited to get the blue bathroom in the past!!
I love the family time, and the songs in church, and pulling out the nativity and the lights around the house - I love thinking of presents that will really make someone feel special(hopefully) and taking the time to slow down and appreciate our lives and family around us. And this year I am SO excited to share that with Carlee who probably won't even notice at 10 months...but I can't wait to see her little face with all the wrapping paper she will get:)

So, in the Christmas mood last night, I whipped up some cards to sell or give out myself...we shall see:)

Well, after meeting these women I was intrigued by all the options, and not too surprised to hear that a lot of the common carriers are in fact bad for the hips of babes - some even recalled. And since 'wearing' the baby at a young age can encourage a good milk supply, I would be inclined to use it with baby #2 someday when we try to overcome this dumb PCOS thing;)

What I was stunned by was that the cost of some of the name brands were $50 or more depending on the type of carrier. Well, I found someone who made their own 'moby' online and sold it for 10 bucks...my sister is testing it out with her newbie right now and I think my girl is probably a bit big for that now anyways...but I do like the looks of ring slings for their ease of use on the go.

So then...next trip to the 2nd hand store, I found a nice strong piece of material for 6 bucks, picked up a couple of harness rings at the hardware store for 4 dollars(can also be bought online at slingrings.com) and got to work. Since my sewing machine is on the fritz I pulled out the iron and some hemming tap, folded the material down the middle and cut it to about 2.5 meters. I'm about 5'6 and that gives me lots of extra material to work with. And here we go:
Well, we don't have cable right now and I HATE the idea of paying such inflated prices for tv....so I've been researching the last few months on what we will do when the change happens.

This week, they started switching over and I started having fun! I debated getting a new outdoor antenna to ensure we could get some usa channels since we'd be switching anyways, then I thought, wellllll, maybe I can diy it!! And then I did...

I dragged my husband off the couch and forced him to help me make this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhlmJTMzw

And of course took no pictures but it worked fine, not much better than our rabbit ears really....then I thought, let's move it up to the attic and it started coming in much clearer on the analogue.

Then I finally figured out how to get the digital signal on our tv and found, nope, not much coming in from buffalo, a couple christian channels but that was it:( Then I went to thesource and picked up a video amplifier for 30 bucks hoping it would do the trick to get those extra channels in....and sure enough. A couple minutes .later we went from 8ish channels to 21 channels!

Total cost? Under 40 dollars and a very happy girl here...way better than 40 bucks a month, minimum!! Going from about 4 channels to 21? I don't even know what to do with myself:)

Anyone else get creative with the transition?

Ps. my girl is almost crawling!!
So, my first gluten free loaf of bread was created yesterday!

I used some pre-mixed gluten free flour from Kinnikinnick and followed their directions for a sweet bread loaf and then added some quinoa and cinnamon to the mix as well. Turned the breadmaker on and a couple of hours later...delicious!!

Even the hubby ate it with no complaints:) Maybe I'll try it with some raisins or dark chocolate chips next time! Mmmm!

Carlee was pretty jealous of the bread but found a remote to gnaw on instead:

Check out this site if you have never heard of pcos: http://pcosdiva.com. Knowing that if I wasn't successful there was a chance we would deal with infertility was a pretty good motivator for me so I changed my diet, starting taking Apple Cider Vinegar daily to stabilize my blood sugar levels, and took up an aerobic class once a week.... And it worked! I dropped around 15 lbs or so and when I went off my BC my cycles were about 40 days rather than the previous 90! Much improved:)

Nothing feels better than having that goal and succeeding, even getting pregnant very soon after going off BC and having a wonderful pregnancy and delivery...only to find out that pcos was still plaguing me! Little did I know that my syndrome affected my milk supply, and since I was unaware this was a symptom, I did nothing beforehand to combat it and was unable to fully breastfeed- we do half/half with formula but I can say I'm proud of fighting for all that I have(pumping for a month and going on herbs/drugs) BUT had I known during pregnancy it was an issue I would have been able to do a lot more and possibly had more success. I was fairly sad and embarrassed by my inability to completely provide for Carlee for the first couple of months and really paid no attention to what my diet and postpartum life was doing to my body and now - five months postpartum - my pcos is back full force!

Now, I feel I am back right where I was two years ago physically...you know, except now I have a baby to cheer me up:) But nevertheless, I am about 15-20 lbs from where my cycles returned to normal last time and has get to have a period since delivery...and so the journey starts again! I find its harder not to snack when I'm home throughout the day but am ready to start getting down to business again! Now, any friends reading this...your job is to yell 'NO' anytime I reach for my beloved chips;)

Thanks for listening guys, any thoughts, encouragement or advice is very welcome!

And to her mom's excitement, last week she learned that sleeping for longer than 40 minutes at a time during the day is A-OK! She now sleeps for about 2 hours at naptime and I get to do some cleaning and such around the house for the first time! SO EXCITED!

And speaking of getting things done around the house, five months after doing the kitchen reno seen here, the knobs arrived and were installed! And at a HUGE deal as well. We hit up a place in Maine while I was home in NB for a bit that sells their knobs for a dollar a piece! Compared to the 4-5 dollar price tag here, I was pretty proud of my good find! The selection wasn't amazing but good enough for me:)

Well, here we are having a massive heat advisory for tomorrow!! Gotta go find a pool to lounge in!
